Podcasts for the Win!

Technology has such a big influence on the classroom and now it is getting even bigger. Hmm... You may be asking yourself how could it get bigger? Well, the answer is simple. Podcasting... The word Podcast is a mix between iPod and broadcasting. Podcasts are accessible 24/7 and are used similar to radio talk broadcasts. Podcasts can cover a range of topics from education all the way to how to fix your credit. They can be created anywhere and used by practically anyone.

In this time of COVID, many teachers and school districts have had To find a way to incorporate online learning. This poses the question, “How could we implement podcasting in the classroom?” Well, this answer is also simple. Listening centers, introducing a new unit, helping students transition when coming back from recess, and so much more. The great thing about podcasts are most of them have a transcript that goes along with them. This helps students listen and be able to follow along using the transcript. Podcasts also help students develop listening skills because there is not usually a video associated with it.

The best idea for podcasting in the classroom is allowing students to create their own podcast. It can be a classroom podcast to inform parents or family members of what has happened so far or what the class is looking forward to. Podcasts can also be used to assess a student’s knowledge over a given topic. This can lead to podcasts used as formative and summarize assessments. Overall, there are quite a bit of benefits to using podcasts in the classroom. Podcasts for the win!!
